The Mining Environment: What Actually Kills Weighbridges
Understand the failure modes before you read a specification sheet.
- Abrasive dust and fines. These pack under the deck until they carry load, and they abrade cable insulation. This is the number one cause of weighing error at mines.
- Water. Pit drainage that works in March does not work in July. Water in a pit is the leading cause of load cell failure anywhere, and mines make it worse by filling the pit with slurry.
- Impact loading. Loaded tippers driving on at speed generate peak forces well above static load. Sizing cells to the static share is how bridges fail in year two.

Requirements for a Mining Weighbridge
Capacity and Deck Sizing
- Size for your heaviest fully loaded vehicle plus 25–30% margin, not for the average.
- Most mining and aggregate sites need 80–100 tonne systems. Sites handling trailers and multi-axle rigs need the higher end.
- Deck length must cover the full wheelbase of your longest vehicle in one weighment. Splitting a vehicle across two weighments introduces error you will never reconcile.
- Deck width matters at mines — tippers approach fast and not always straight. Wider decks reduce edge strikes.
Load Cells
This is where mining specifications diverge most from general industrial ones.
- Compression or double-ended shear beam geometry, with proper rocker or ball-and-cup mounting so the deck returns to centre after every impact.
- Hermetically sealed, laser-welded construction. Potted and adhesive-sealed cells fail at the cable entry, and at a mine they fail fast.
- IP68 minimum. IP67 is rated for temporary immersion. Mining pits are not temporary.
- Generous overload rating — 150% safe, 300% ultimate.
- Six-wire cable in conduit, protected along the full run. Unprotected cable is rodent food and dozer bait.
- Sealed, gasketed junction box, ideally stainless, mounted above expected water level.
Foundation and Drainage
- Get a soil bearing test before design. Mining sites have variable ground, and a settled corner produces errors that look like a load cell fault forever.
- Engineer drainage first, structure second. A sloped, drained apron around the bridge is worth more than any premium on the deck.
- Provide a hard, cleanable approach — 10–15 metres of paved apron each side keeps fines off the deck.

- UPS backing for the indicator, terminal and any automation
- Surge and lightning protection on both power and signal lines
- Solar backup where grid supply is unreliable

Pitless — Usually the Right Answer
Pitless bridges sit above ground on foundations with approach ramps.
- Debris falls through and can be cleared without confined-space entry
- No pit to fill with water or fines
- Service access from all sides, which matters when downtime costs a shift of dispatch
- Needs more land for ramps
Pit type is often chosen at mines because it saves space and lets vehicles approach from any direction. On a dust-and-water site, that saving is usually reversed within three years by cleaning, pumping and cell replacement. If land allows, go pitless.
Deck Construction
- RCC / concrete-filled deck — heavier, damps impact and vibration well, long surface life under abrasive material. The stronger choice for high-tonnage mining.
- Mild steel deck — faster to install and relocatable, which matters for short-lease quarries and temporary faces.

Bolted modular construction lets you extend or relocate as the mine plan changes. For leases with a defined life, this is the difference between an asset and a stranded cost.
