Weighbridge Calibration Frequency: When and How Often Should You Calibrate?

A weighbridge that reads 40 kg light on every truck does not throw an error. It just quietly hands away material, load after load, until someone runs the numbers at year-end. Most operators only find out when a customer disputes a docket or a Legal Metrology officer walks in.

This guide lays out what the law actually asks of you in India, what a sensible calibration interval looks like for your duty cycle, the warning signs that show up before accuracy slips, and how a proper calibration is carried out. Calibration, Verification and Stamping Are Not the Same Thing

Operators use these three words interchangeably. They are separate events with separate consequences.

  • Calibration is a technical exercise. A service engineer applies known loads, compares them against the indicator reading, and adjusts span and zero until the bridge tracks true.
  • Verification is a legal exercise. A Legal Metrology officer tests the instrument against reference standards and decides whether the error sits inside the permitted band.
  • Stamping is what follows a successful verification — the physical seal and certificate that make the weighbridge legal for trade.

Here is the part most people miss. Passing verification does not mean your weighbridge is accurate. It means the error is small enough to be legal. Those are different bars, and the gap between them is where money leaks out.

What Indian Law Requires

Weighbridges used for trade fall under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011.

  • Verification and stamping must be renewed once every 12 months.
  • Re-verification is compulsory after any repair, relocation, or modification — a load cell swap, a foundation repair, an indicator change.
  • Using a non-standard weight or measure for trade attracts a fine of up to ₹25,000 on a first offence under Section 25, with imprisonment up to six months and a further fine on repeat offences.
  • Only Legal Metrology officers or approved agencies can perform the verification. Your service vendor cannot stamp the bridge.

So the legal floor is annual. Treating that as your full calibration plan is where operators get into trouble.

Why Annual Verification Is Not Enough

Truck weighbridges are OIML accuracy Class III instruments. Take a common 60-tonne bridge with a verification interval (e) of 20 kg. At the loads that matter, the maximum permissible error at verification works out to 1.5e — about 30 kg. In-service inspection typically allows double that band.

Do the arithmetic. A weighbridge can be fully stamped, fully legal, and still be reading 60 kg off on a loaded truck. At 40 trucks a day, 300 working days and ₹4,500 a tonne, a consistent 60 kg bias moves roughly ₹32 lakh a year in one direction. Nothing on the display looks wrong.

That is the uncomfortable insight: the error that hurts you is rarely dramatic. It is small, one-directional, and repeated thousands of times.

How Often You Should Actually Calibrate

There is no single number. Set your interval from load volume, environment and what the bridge is weighing for.

By Duty Cycle

  • Under 20 vehicles a day, light material, covered site — half-yearly calibration, annual verification.
  • 20–75 vehicles a day, standard industrial use — quarterly accuracy check, half-yearly full calibration.
  • Over 75 vehicles a day, or round-the-clock operation — monthly accuracy check, quarterly full calibration.

By Environment

Push the interval tighter if your site has any of these:

  • Coastal or high-humidity locations, where junction box corrosion is the usual culprit
  • Mining, quarry and cement sites with abrasive dust and constant vibration
  • Sites with heavy monsoon water ingress or a pit that holds water
  • Wide seasonal temperature swings, which drag zero around

By What Is at Stake

  • Weighing for statutory trade billing, excise or royalty — treat quarterly as the minimum.
  • Weighing for internal stock movement only — half-yearly is usually defensible.
  • Weighing high-value material such as metal scrap, alloys or edible oil — monthly checks pay for themselves within one dispute.

Trigger Events That Reset the Clock

Calibrate immediately, regardless of schedule, after:

  1. Any load cell replacement or junction box work
  2. Foundation settlement, cracking or pit drainage repair
  3. Vehicle impact against the platform or side rails
  4. Lightning strike or a significant electrical surge
  5. Relocation of the bridge
  6. Any indicator firmware update or terminal replacement

Warning Signs That Show Up Before the Due Date

Accuracy rarely collapses overnight. It degrades, and it leaves a trail.

  • Zero will not hold. The empty platform reads 20 kg one morning and –40 kg the next. This is the single most useful daily check, and it costs nothing.
  • Repeat weighings spread out. Drive the same truck across three times. If readings vary by more than one division, something is loose, dirty or failing.
  • Position changes the answer. A truck parked forward reads different from the same truck parked back. That points to an eccentricity problem — usually one weak load cell or a jammed check rod.
  • Drivers start choosing lanes. When operators quietly prefer a particular approach angle, they have already noticed something you have not.
  • Disputes cluster. Two complaints in a month from different customers is data, not coincidence.

Corner load error, not span error, is the most common fault we find on site. Annual verification often catches it late because the officer tests centred loads first.

How a Proper Calibration Is Carried Out

A calibration worth paying for follows a sequence. Ask your service partner which of these steps they perform.

Step 1 — Pre-Inspection

Check the pit for water and debris, inspect load cell cables for rodent damage, confirm junction box seals, and verify that check rods and bumpers allow free movement without excess play.

Step 2 — Zero and Repeatability

Set zero on the empty deck. Run a known load on and off three times to confirm the bridge returns to the same reading.

Step 3 — Corner or Eccentricity Test

Place roughly one-third of capacity over each load cell position in turn. Readings across all positions should agree within tolerance. This is where most faults surface.

Step 4 — Linearity Across the Range

Apply certified test weights in increments up to capacity. A bridge can be perfect at 10 tonnes and off at 45 tonnes; testing only at one point tells you very little.

Step 5 — Substitution or Build-Up Testing

Few sites carry 60 tonnes of certified weights. The accepted method is to test with certified weights up to a point, then substitute loaded trucks or material for the remaining range, using the verified portion as the reference.

Step 6 — Documentation

Record as-found and as-left readings. As-found data is the part that matters — it tells you how far the bridge drifted since the last visit, and lets you tighten or relax your interval with evidence instead of guesswork.

Build a Calibration Calendar That Runs Itself

  • Log daily zero readings in a register or in your weighbridge software. Two minutes a shift.
  • Run a monthly check with one dedicated test truck of known weight. Same truck, same fuel level, same driver.
  • Book quarterly or half-yearly professional calibration well ahead of the season when your site is busiest.
  • Diarise the Legal Metrology renewal 60 days before expiry, not the week it lapses.
  • Keep as-found reports together. Three cycles of data will show you your real drift rate.

FAQs

Is calibration mandatory in India, or only verification? Only verification and stamping are legally mandatory, on an annual cycle. Calibration is what makes sure you pass that verification and stay accurate between visits. Most disputes and losses happen in the months between stamps.

Can I calibrate my own weighbridge? You can run daily zero checks and repeatability checks yourself, and you should. Span adjustment needs certified test weights and trained technicians, and legal verification must be done by an authorised officer or approved agency.

What tolerance should I accept from my weighbridge? Legal tolerance for a Class III bridge is generous. Operationally, insist on a bridge that holds well inside the legal band — the legal limit is a ceiling, not a target.

Does a new weighbridge need calibration in the first year? Yes. New installations settle. Foundations cure, mounting hardware beds in, and cables settle into their runs. Schedule a check three to six months after commissioning.

How long does a calibration take? A routine calibration on a healthy bridge takes three to five hours. Add time if load cells need replacing or the pit needs clearing.
