Most weighbridge failures are not sudden. They build up over months — a blocked pit, a chewed load cell cable, a check rod that stopped moving freely — and the first symptom is a billing dispute you cannot win. A 2013 New Zealand field study found that combined maintenance-related faults could push weighing variation as high as 4% of total payload. On a 30-tonne load, that is 1.2 tonnes.
This checklist gives you what to inspect daily, weekly, monthly and annually, what each check is actually looking for, and how to record it. We build and service weighbridges, so this is the routine we hand our own customers.
Why the Checklist Matters More Than the Calibration
Annual calibration corrects the bridge on one day of the year. Maintenance is what keeps it correct for the other 364.
The economics are not close. Routine weighbridge maintenance in India typically runs ₹15,000 to ₹60,000 a year, depending on capacity and site conditions. A single load cell failure means replacement cost plus days of downtime plus every truck queued outside your gate. One unresolved customer dispute can cost more than a decade of servicing.
Here is the pattern we see repeatedly: sites that log a daily zero reading catch roughly 80% of developing faults before they affect a weighment. Sites that do not, find out from a customer.
Daily Checklist — Five Minutes Per Shift
These are operator tasks. No tools, no training beyond a short briefing.
- Check zero on an empty platform. Note the reading in a register or in your weighbridge software. Do not just press zero — record what it said first.
- Walk the pit or the underside. Look for standing water, mud, spillage and stones wedged between the deck and the foundation.
- Clear debris around every load cell. Anything bridging the gap between the deck and the ground carries load and steals it from the cells.
- Look at the approach ramps. Loose gravel and potholes make drivers brake hard on the deck, which hammers the mounting hardware.
- Confirm the indicator display is clean and readable. A half-visible digit gets misread.
- Check that nobody is sitting in the cab during static weighing. Movement inside the vehicle adds noise to the reading.
The One Daily Habit Worth Enforcing
Log the zero reading with a timestamp and operator name. A zero that wanders by 20 kg over three weeks is the earliest signal of a failing load cell or water ingress — and it is invisible unless you write it down.
Weekly Checklist — The End-Middle-End Test
This is the single most useful weekly check, and it needs no test weights.
- Take one loaded truck of stable weight. Weigh it with the vehicle positioned over the front of the deck.
- Reposition to the centre. Weigh again.
- Reposition to the rear. Weigh again.
- Compare the three readings.
A healthy bridge holds all three within about three divisions. Wider spread than that points to an eccentricity fault — usually one load cell out of step, a jammed check rod, or a mount that has taken an impact.
Also do these weekly:
- Inspect load cell cables for rodent damage. In Indian sites, rodents are among the top causes of load cell failure, and the damage is almost always at the cable, not the cell.
- Check the junction box seal and look for moisture or corrosion inside.
- Confirm check rods and bumpers still allow the deck to float freely without excessive play.
- Verify the earthing connection is intact.
Monthly Checklist — Wash, Measure, Compare
Cleaning
- Jet wash the deck surface and, carefully, the underside. Keep the jet away from load cells, cable glands and the junction box.
- Clear the pit drainage completely. A pit that holds water after monsoon rain will corrode mounts and destroy cells.
- Remove and clean rubber inserts and seals, then refit them.
Measurement
- Measure platform position against fixed reference marks. Any movement since last month means the foundation or the mounts need attention.
- Repeat the end-middle-end test and compare against last month’s numbers. The trend matters more than the single reading.
- Re-zero the bridge and run a repeatability check — same truck, three passes, same direction.
Inspection
- Check foundation and pit walls for cracking or settlement.
- Inspect deck welds and side rails for impact damage.
- Test the surge protection and confirm cabling from the junction box to the indicator is undamaged along its full run.
Quarterly and Half-Yearly Tasks
- Torque check on all mounting hardware and anchor bolts.
- Load cell output check at the junction box — compare millivolt readings across cells to find one that is drifting.
- Full inspection of the indicator, printer, display board and any camera or boom barrier tied into the system.
- Backup of the weighbridge software database and a test restore.
- Review the last three months of zero logs and end-middle-end results together.
Annual Tasks — Professional Service and Legal Verification
Professional Calibration
Booked with a service engineer carrying certified test weights. It should include:
- Zero point test on the empty deck
- Span test across the working range, not just at one load point
- Linearity and hysteresis check — loading up and unloading down
- Eccentric or corner load test across every cell position
- As-found and as-left documentation
Ask for the as-found numbers. That is the record of how far the bridge drifted since the last visit, and it is what lets you set a sensible interval instead of guessing. Annual calibration in India typically costs ₹10,000 to ₹40,000.
Legal Metrology Verification and Stamping
Under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009, weighbridges used for trade must be verified and stamped every 12 months, and re-verified after any repair, relocation or modification. Section 25 provides a fine of up to ₹25,000 for a first offence, with imprisonment of up to six months on repeat offences. Diarise the renewal 60 days before expiry.

Adjust the Routine to Your Site
- Mining, quarry and cement — daily pit clearing is not optional, and dust makes monthly washing a weekly job.
- Coastal locations — inspect junction box and cable glands weekly. Salt air kills connections before it touches the cells.
- Food, grain and agri — rodent control around cable runs matters as much as cleaning.
- Monsoon-heavy regions — check pit drainage before the season, not during it.
- High-traffic sites above 75 vehicles a day — move the end-middle-end test to twice weekly.
FAQs
How often should a weighbridge be professionally serviced? At minimum annually, alongside legal verification. Sites running over 50 vehicles a day, or working in dusty or coastal conditions, usually need half-yearly or quarterly service visits.
Can I pressure-wash a weighbridge? Yes, on the deck surface and carefully on the underside. Keep the jet away from load cells, cable glands and the junction box. Direct high-pressure water into a cell seal and you will be replacing it.
What causes most weighbridge failures in India? Water ingress and cable damage lead the list, with rodents and corroded junction boxes close behind. Very few failures start inside the load cell itself.
Do I need to stop operations for maintenance? Daily and weekly checks take minutes and fit between vehicles. Monthly cleaning and annual calibration need the bridge offline — schedule them around your dispatch peaks.
